Even when you are pregnant, you can continue to use skin care products, and in fact you should do so, because during pregnancy (and breastfeeding) the skin can be particularly demanding. It may dry out more easily, be oilier than usual or more sensitive to inflammation.
During pregnancy and breastfeeding, you probably want to invest in a simple skin care routine, which nevertheless works.
In your routine, choose soothing ingredients for skin that reacts more sensitively than usual, such as centella, take care of moisturizing the skin (especially at night), protect the skin from the sun and use gentle cleansing products.
You can add a gentle vitamin C and niacinamide product to your routine, as pigmentation changes, such as melasma, may appear on the skin more easily than before. Brightening products combined with sunscreen that protects the skin from the sun's UV rays, help to keep the skin bright and radiant throughout pregnancy.
Skin care products to avoid during pregnancy
During pregnancy, the surface blood circulation of the skin may increase and substances may be absorbed from the skin into the bloodstream more than usual, which is why you should be careful with certain types of cosmetic products.
During pregnancy and breastfeeding, it is good to completely avoid certain ingredients in skin care, such as vitamin A derivatives, i.e. retinal and retinol, strong acids, self-tanners, perfumes, as well as e.g. foundations that use chemical protection filter substances.
So that you don't have to completely abandon anti-age skin care, retinol can be replaced during pregnancy and breastfeeding with hyaluronic acid, ginseng and, for example, fermented bifida lactic acid extracts that strengthen the skin's microbiome.
During pregnancy, it is recommended to avoid repeated use of chemical sunscreens - so protect the body with clothes if possible, and primarily prefer physical sunscreens whose protection is based on titanium dioxide or zinc oxide.
Everyone's skin behaves individually during pregnancy, and we recommend being careful with stronger active ingredients, as a normally perfectly suitable ingredient might be too strong for use during pregnancy. If you notice that your skin reacts more strongly to a familiar cosmetic product during pregnancy or breastfeeding, you should reduce or stop using it for the time being.
Safe cosmetic products during pregnancy
Safe skin care products both during pregnancy and while breastfeeding include physical sunscreens, moisturizers that do not use additional chemical sun protection, and moisturizers, serums, ampoules and masks that do not contain the above-mentioned avoidable ingredients.
Safe skin care ingredients during pregnancy include, for example, centella, hyaluronic acid, vitamin C, rice, heartleaf and niacinamide.
